My thoughts on WCTH S9E6
I have been trying to figure out how I actually feel about this episode. E6 was heavy on the Nathan scenes but not really in a positive way. Nathan is one character who just seems to be the punching bag for the series and I'm not sure why.
Nathan's first "job" as mountie in this episode was to direct a traffic jam. Honestly I found it ridiculous. The guy should have better things to do than direct traffic. If that's not bad enough, then he's asked to solve the "case of Ned's missing peaches. Seriously? Ned gave the peaches to Gustav in a previous episode. And his final mountie "job" of the episode was the most ridiculous one IMO...talking to the two culprits of an ice cream fight. Are you kidding me? Why is a mountie responsible for doing this? It's Ned and Flo's shop and Mei was the one in charge...why don't they handle this as they should be. This has absolutely nothing to do with Nathan except that Allie is his daughter. He could have handled this in private with her. And honestly why does E have to show up and take part in this as well. This did not occur during school hours and she is not the mother of either child involved. I honestly don't understand where the writers are taking any of this and how they found this to be necessary.
What is more heartbreaking for Nathan was what we witnessed during another dinner with Mei. At this time he opens up to her more and he explains to her that when he was 13 he was in a bad accident with a horse. As a result of that accident he received...wait for it...a concussion. OK. So what are we to assume from this revelation? Cut this guy some slack for goodness sake. Stop beating him up and let's start building him up into the character we know that he is. After this discussion with Mei she feels compelled to tell Bill that she is concerned with Nathan. When Nathan finds out that Mei spoke to Bill, he confronts her...stands up for himself and tells her that she broke his trust. She doesn't apologize but instead indicates that it was a misunderstanding. Huh?
As for Mei, Bill ends up asking her if she has discussed with Nathan what’s going on with her husband. Mei gets defensive and states Jeffrey is not her husband and that because Bill is her attorney he should believe her. . He says “I know what you said. I’ve also found that people who get upset over the truth might be living a lie.” Then we see in the promo for next week what appears to be a very angry Jeffrey arriving in Hope Valley. I'm thinking Mei is running from an abusive relationship possibly. Nathan appears to be very shocked and disappointed when he finds out she is married. I personally don't feel any romantic vibes between them but time will tell.
I'm not liking how the writer's are portraying Hickam right now. He is just being portrayed as a complete goof. Hanging his mayor sign, which eventually falls. Locking himself out of his office. People complaining and talking about him behind his back. Even so far as Lee writing an editorial about him in the newspaper. He's portrayed as completely incompetent for the role of mayor. I need to see him flourish and stand out in future episodes. There is something more to this guy and he needs to stop being the comic relief in the show.
Some of the other "highlights" of the show.
Henry believes that Jerome Smith is going to reopen the coal mine. Lucas, Fiona, Henry and Bill all talk about this and are keeping this to themselves right now. Fiona is going back to San Francisco.
Molly and Florence believe it is their responsibility to teach etiquette lessons to the towns people. Lucas shuts them down with their idea to hold classes in the saloon, so they are now going to see if they can have an advice column in the paper.
The Canfields want to talk to Bill about a partnership in the cafe. Joseph was also thinking about partnership in the mill but has put a pin in that for now.
Elizabeth has decided it's her calling to create a book wagon and travel up in to the mountains to ensure that everyone has access to books.
Mike fumbles his way into asking Faith to dinner. Date or non-date? Not sure but I like the idea of this relationship so far.
Did you enjoy this episode? What were your favourite parts?
