Review: I honestly wanted to like this one...really I did. But I just couldn't get into it at all. I found myself drawn to playing games on my phone and listening to the movie that was playing in the background. That is always a good indication that the plot is just not doing anything for me.
I was honestly super excited when I found out that Appa/Mr. Kim (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) had a supporting role in this movie. I mean Appa is a legend. Absolutely loved him in "Kim's Convenience." Appa's role was super small unfortunately but well acted/delivered nonetheless. The final heart-to-heart scene with his daughter was believable and memorable. He did not disappoint.
The 2 leads on the other hand, while Nate (Raymond Ablack) provided a solid performance and was believable as the infatuated best friend, the two leads really had zero romantic chemistry. I didn't get a love vibe at all. To me it was friend zone and that was it. Catherine Haena Kim (Lauren) offered an ok performance but nothing to really write home about. Nate had more chemistry with Lily in the first 3 mins of meeting her at the community centre then he did with Lauren.
The past boyfriends were ok and offered her some guidance, but I simply didn't understand why it took 4 ex-boyfriends for her to realize that she had commitment issues and feelings for Nate. Honestly just talking to her two most recent boyfriends would have been sufficient. The last run in when she balked at being proposed to while zip lining, geez I thought she was going to hurl herself off the platform in terror. If that doesn't scream commitment issues I don't know what does?
Not much else to say really. I was bored by the concept. I really don't like the old plot of being visited by your past to help you navigate a better future. It's been done too much over the years. There were some good performances as noted about but overall I would not watch this movie again.
