Review: Christmas Sail was a refreshing change from the overused Hallmark plots that are always recycled in any Hallmark movie. The script was original and was very appealing to me when I read through the synopsis before watching the movie. Not only was there a new story line, but it was a movie that didn't cast your usual Hallmark acting crew. These two factors drew me in out of intrigue for sure. Having said that, the movie was okay overall. It wasn't something that I absolutely loved and it had some good moments. Admittedly I was wondering at first what I got myself into as the first 30-40 minutes were beyond boring and I was going to turn it off. Then something clicked and the story got interesting and kept me interested until the end.
The little girl was cute and held her own in the movie. Both Liz (Katee Sackhoff) and Luke (Patrick Sabongui) were exceptionally good in their roles. I would really like to see them in a different movie as their performances were solid. I thought their chemistry was lukewarm. It was passable and somewhat believable. I did like how the plot didn't have some big blow out misunderstanding between the two and handled a more mature story line where they admit they want to be together but it was just bad timing.
Liz's relationship with her dad (Terry O'Quinn) was definitely strained at first and admittedly the reconciliation and healing of their relationship was definitely tear worthy. Terry O'Quinn was fabulous in this role and really portrayed the role of a grieving husband well. It was nice to see him open up to his daughter and build a relationship with his granddaughter only to see that he did need to move on with his life.
The ending scene with the Christmas Sailboat parade was definitely unexpected. I'm not sure what I expected as I knew they were working on a boat to be in the festival but just seeing the boats decorated and lit up on water at night was beautiful. I really enjoyed that scene. And the romantic gesture from Luke during the festival was absolutely unexpected and had me in tears. It was so beautiful.
Overall a solid movie that is worth the watch.
