Review:
The Nine Kittens of Christmas, starring Brandon Routh and Kimberley Sustad, is a sequel to their popular "The Nine Lives of Christmas" that aired on Hallmark about 7 years ago. I have watched the original movie a few times now and enjoyed the chemistry between these two actors. I was excited for the sequel to see where Hallmark was going to go with these lovebirds after 7 years.
Let me start off by saying that I wasn't really happy to find out that they were no longer a couple at the beginning of the movie. They had broken up due to Zachary's (Routh) inability to commit or accept change. After the breakup Marilee (Sustad) had moved on, opened a vet practice, moved to another state, and was in a new relationship, only to find herself back home again and thrown into the path of Zachary...again. Zachary was still working in the firehouse and hadn't really changed much outside of now being a captain. Still living the same predictable and not overly open to changing anything easily. Of course Marilee swoops in and miraculously he realizes he does need to change and does. He realizes he needs to move forward, stop fearing commitment and change, and finally marry the girl he should have married in the first movie.
Didn't like this plot at all. I just felt like we had been there done that. It was them just falling in love yet again. Same story line really just mixed in with a bunch of cute kittens. Regardless of the limited plot, Kimberley Sustad is just fantastic. She is one of my favourites and she doesn't disappoint. I feel like she really kept this movie flowing and is the one responsible for making this movie work. Yes it did work. I just found it stale. The chemistry between the two was still there, the humour with Sustad...impeccable. She really hits her performances out of the park. Routh was ok...similar to his first appearance in the original movie. He doesn't stand out and yet he doesn't disappear as well. He's just there. And that boy needs a haircut!
The kittens were cute. Kimberley Sustad was fantastic. Gregory Harrison was solid. Plot was blah. It's an okay sequel and hopefully they stay together this time as I don't want to watch a third movie.
