Review:
So I think I'm going to be in the minority here but the much anticipated second movie of The Wedding Veil aired on Saturday and for me it was...meh. Hear me out here as I go through my likes (yes there are some) and my dislikes.
Positives:
Autumn Reeser - She is such a beautiful actress and I loved her. She is charming, beautiful and I really liked her in the role as Emma. She is a solid actress who can more than carry a movie and I just like watching her on screen.
Lacey Chabert & Alison Sweeney - This dynamo are two of my favourites in the Hallmark world along with Autumn. I really liked them on screen together and I enjoyed them in this movie a bit more than the first. They have a great dynamic on screen together and I found they seemed to appear more together in this movie than they did the first one. It seemed more real as it wasn't just faces appearing on phone screens and tablets like in the first movie. Instead we had more scenes of them in cafes or in offices which to me was a little more real and personal then just on zoom calls.
Wardrobe - Just like the first movie, the wardrobe in this movie was spot on. Autumn was outfitted in some beautiful ensembles! I also really loved some of the more casual outfits that Paolo had as well. And can we talk about that wedding dress? Wow. That dress was absolutely gorgeous and Autumn looked stunning. The purple of the bridesmaid dresses was also gorgeous and the ladies looked amazing.
Italy - Wow. Just wow. We were in Italy and it did not disappoint. This was probably the best part of the movie for me. I got lost in the places and culture and history of Italy. I want to visit Italy so badly now that I've watched the movie. The accents, the culture, the family dinners. I bought into everything. Now I'm no expert on Italian culture but everything seemed authentic.
Chemistry - The chemistry between Autumn and Paolo was good. I liked their little meet-cute while she was buying a ticket and the coincidence that his family owned the lace shop was cute. I enjoyed watching them together on screen and thought they complemented each other. Chemistry was quite good.
Negatives:
Plot - The plot of this movie for me was just plain B - O - R - I - N - G! Honestly I was SO bored and wasn't the least bit interested in where the veil came from. I didn't find the "mystery" or the process of figuring out the origin at all interesting. I often forgot that they were even trying to figure it out as it was so insignificant to me. To me I was more interested in the scenery than I was the plot of the movie. If you ask me where the veil came from right now...even after watching the movie...I don't know. That's how disinterested I was.
Train Ticket - Um...did it bother anyone else that the guy jumped on a train without a train ticket? The train was heading somewhere and he jumped on without a ticket. That bothered me probably more than it should have.
Professor? - Wasn't she in Italy to teach some courses? She had an awful lot of down time to go investigate a veil and didn't seem to have any real involvement in teaching courses. I felt like this was such a weak point in this movie. We barely saw any involvement as a professor and her assistance with the student who didn't have the money to graduate seemed like an after thought. I didn't see the point of this part of the movie at all. And back to her being there to teach...if I was invited to lecture in Italy and I had as much free time as her...best job ever.
No Peter sighting - I was super bummed that Peter (Kevin McGarry) didn't make a cameo appearance in this movie. He was referenced a few times but I kept watching movie until the very end as I was sure he would show up for the wedding! Boy was I disappointed when all they did was mention that he was at the wedding but off talking sports with another guest. So disappointed. A big missed opportunity here.
Rushed ending - So yes I was bored but I still wanted to see how things ended up. As I watched the clock I noticed there was one a few minutes left. I resigned myself to the thought that they would just do long distance. Then after they kiss they rush to 6 months later and have a 30 second wedding and basically throw the veil into Tracey's hands to tie in the 3rd movie. I have to say I was super disappointed in this ending. You blink and it's 6 months later. You blink again and the movie is over. Yes I found the movie boring but I would have loved to have had a few more minutes dedicated to their story.
So I wasn't the biggest fan of this one. I had such high hopes for this trilogy of movies and this one disappointed me. I still have hope that the final movie will pick up where we left off and be great. Looking forward to the conclusion of this series on Saturday.
