When Calls The Heart - Season 6 - My Thoughts - Introduction

Way back in 2014 I started watching When Calls The Heart and was addicted right away. I was a loyal viewer right through to season 3 and then in 2016 my youngest son was born. After he was born I just found I didn't have much "me" time and was juggling the life of stay-at-home mom with one boy in Kindergarten and a new baby, so I just stopped watching. I don't think it was an actual decision to stop, it just happened naturally.

Fast forward to January 2022 and after seeing so many people talk about how great the show was and of course hearing some big news about main cast members dying and people in outrage over the end of a love triangle, I was intrigued. So I decided that I would set my sights on watching this series, starting from season 4, and to try and watch every episode so that I would be caught up in time for the March release of season 9.

I wasn't planning on writing anything about my first WCTH binge watch however I just finished S6 and I must talk about it. Season 6 is the best season that I have watched so far and I have 2 more to go!

Today I want to address how I feel WCTH writers handled the loss of two major characters from Hope Valley.

Jack Thornton - Season 6 picks up approximately 1 year after Jack's death and frankly Jack really wasn't spoken about much. I understand that Elizabeth is moving on and such but after 5 years of her undying devotion to him, I would have thought that he would have been mentioned a tad more. Don't get me wrong I don't think the story needs to dwell on his passing but a few nods here and there and perhaps some shared stories with her son would have sufficed for me. Perhaps I am being a bit picky here but I can't imagine how he wouldn't have more of a presence in some scenes (eg baptism) and not just be shown in a few photos.

Abigail Stanton - Abigail was such a huge presence in seasons 1 through 5 and I was wondering how her departure, due to the firing of Lori Laughlin, would be handled... especially since she was in the first 3 S6 episodes. Well...the writers took care of this immediately in episode 4 with Elizabeth explaining that Abigail and her son Cody had to go away to look after her ill mother. She would be missed but life goes on. Short and sweet. The rest of the season...it's like she never existed. In fact I don't think anyone utters anything about her or Cody. If they did it was so insignificant that I can't even recall it. It's like they dropped off the face of earth. It's a bit surreal as she was a huge part of everyone's lives in Hope Valley that surely someone would say something now and then. The woman was a mother figure to many, owned the cafe, was Elizabeth's best friend, mother-in-law to Clara, business partner with Bill, and was the mayor for goodness sake.Yes the actress is gone but I don't know why she can't be referred to every now and then.

How do you think the writers handled these 2 characters?

Stay tuned for more S6 thoughts.
